What is Celexa?

Celexa(citalopram) is an antidepressant drug produced and manufactured by Forest Pharmaceuticals.  Celexa is a SSRI, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, meaning it increases the activity of serotonin in the brain.  Celexa has been approved by the FDA to treat major depression and is used in other countries to treat panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

As with other SSRI drugs such as Paxil or Prozac, Celexa has dangerous side effects leading to a multitude of claims and lawsuits by those injured through the use of the drug.

Celexa Side Effects

Celexa has been linked to several dangerous side effects, most notably to the birth defect of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN).  In December of 2011, the FDA announced the link between PPHN and Celexa use during pregnancy.

PPHN causes breathing and lung function problems immediately after the birth.  These issues can compromise the health of the newborn and potentially cause long-term complications.  A severe case can damage the organs permanently and even lead to death.

In July of 2011, a study suggested a link between Celexa and neural tube defects.  A neural tube defect is one of the most common birth defects and is defined by an opening in the spinal cord or brain occurring very early in development.  Celexa has been linked to a type of neural tube defect known as spina bifida.

In addition to birth defects, Celexa has been known to pose an unnecessary risk of violent behavior, anxiety, aggression and suicidal behavior.  These risks are particularly apparent in users under the age of 25.

In 2011, the FDA reported that anyone taking more than 40mg a day of Celexa may suffer from abnormal heart rhythms and thereafter recommended prescribed dosages less than 40mg per day.  If you suffer from abnormal heart rhythms and are currently prescribed more than 40mg per day, please contact our Celexa attorneys for a free case evaluation to discuss your legal options.
