What is Paxil?

Paxil (paroxetine) is an SSRI type of antidepressant drug manufactured by Glaxo Smith Kline. SSRI stands for “Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor.” Paxil is used to treat conditions such as depression, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It works by helping to restore balance of serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter (a chemical that relays signals from one part of the brain to another). Restoring a balance of serotonin can improve mood, sleep, appetite, energy level, interest in daily living, and decrease fear, anxiety, negative  unwanted thoughts, panic attacks, and the urge to perform repeated tasks.

What birth defect risks are associated with Paxil?

The major risk associated with Paxis, and all SSRI drugs, is birth defect. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an “FDA Alert” in July of 2006. This alert pointed to studies showing an increased risk (6 times more likely) for persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) in infants born to mothers who took SSRIs after the 20th week of pregnancy. Other studies have shown that taking SSRIs during the first trimester of pregnancy increase the risk of an infant having cardiovascular malformations, mainly ventricular septal defects (VSDs) and atrial septal defects (ASDs), and increases the risk (2 to 3 times) of right ventricular outflow tract obstruction.

Many infants exposed to SSRIs during the third trimester have required hospitalization, respiratory support, and/or tube feeding due to:

  • Respiratory distress
  • Cyanosis
  • Apnea
  • Seizures
  • Temperature instability
  • Feeding difficulties
  • Vomiting
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Hypotonia
  • Hypertonia
  • Hyperreflexia
  • Tremors
  • Jitteriness
  • Irritability
  • Constant crying
  • Symptoms of drug discontinuation syndrome

What are the individual health risks assocaited with Paxil?

A study monitored a significantly large group of individuals. A portion of the group took Paxil while the other portion took a placebo (a harmless, medically ineffective, pill). The study showed Paxil increases the rate of self-harm, suicidal thoughts and suicidal behavior. Additionally, the study showed the risk increases significantly in children, adolescents, and young adults (between the ages of 18 and 30) taking the medication. Since then, several studies confirmed this dramatic increase in young Paxil users. As a result, the FDA issued a warning regarding these suicidal risks.

Paxil Lawsuits:

Lawsuits are pending against the manufacturer of Paxil due to its devastating side effects. These lawsuits range from class action lawsuits to wrongful death lawsuits. Glaxo Smith Kline set aside more than $3 billion to fund the settlement of these cases and has settled many of these cases over the last several years.
