What is Wellbutrin?

Wellbutrin (bupropion) is an antidepressant and smoking cessation aid manufactured by Valeant Pharmaceuticals of North America.  Wellbutrin is an atypical antidepressant of the aminoketone class of drugs.

It was initially approved by the FDA in 1985, however due to the high risk of epileptic seizures it was taken off the market and re-introduced in 1989 with a lower maximum dosage.

Despite its re-introduction into the market, Wellbutrin has been linked to several dangerous side effects that have put it at the center of numerous lawsuits throughout the country.

Wellbutrin Side Effects

The most common side effects of Wellbutrin are insomnia, headaches, nausea and agitation.  However Wellbutrin can still be very dangerous for seizures when taken at high dosage.

Wellbutrin has also been linked to congenital heart defects by interfering with the development of the fetus causing serious birth defects.  Women who take Wellbutrin during pregnancy may run a greater risk for having a baby born with heart defects, according to a recent study by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Wellbutrin birth defect links include:

  • Down’s syndrome
  • Spina bifida
  • Blindness
  • Hernia
  • Clubfoot
  • Cleft lip
  • Malformations

Suicidal Behavior

Wellbutrin was one of 10 antidepressants drugs to be ordered by the FDA to include warnings about an increased risk of deepening depression and increasing suicidal behavior.  The FDA strongly urged patients on Wellbutrin and their families to closely monitor and report any significant changes in their behavior.

These risks are particulary apparent is young adults and children ages 18-24.  The FDA has conducted clinical trials showing the drugs nearly doubled the incidence of suicidal behavior in this age group.  Special attention should be paid to any young adult on Wellbutrin.
